I was lucky enough to be able to see a General Electric T58, gas turbine engine, disassembled and prepped for rebuild. On July 1, 1959, it became the first turbine engine to gain FAA certification for civil helicopter use. Weighing only 305 lb and delivering a maximum of 1200-1400 hp, these engine provided a very good power to weight ratio. The fairly small foot print of 55″ long and a diameter of 20.2″ allowed for use in several applications besides Helicopters. This particular one is used in the 2011 Worlds Champion Jet RIver boat, Unnatural Disaster out of Fort St. John, BC. Thanks to WIKIPEDIA for the info.
